The Joys of Family Travel in Hanoi

Recently, we ventured to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Halong Baywith our 2-year-old and infant in tow. Halong Bay and its surrounding caves have always been on my bucket list.

Journey to Halong Bay

From Vietnam's capital, Hanoi, Halong Bay is just a 2-hour drive away. However, residing in southern Ho Chi Minh City, our journey began with a domestic flight crossing the country.
The flight between Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi takes about 2 hours—a breeze compared to international travel, thanks to the absence of immigration procedures. Our time in the air passed quickly with milk, play, and walks along the aisle, feeling momentary compared to our 6.5-hour flights to Japan.

In Hanoi

Upon arriving in Hanoi, we indulged in what's touted as the best Pho in Vietnam, Pho Thin. I have a particular fondness for bún chả and Phở, both northern delicacies scarcely found in their authentic form in southern Ho Chi Minh.
Delicious Pho bo (Beef Pho) was a perfect start to our Halong Bay adventure, satisfying even before reaching the bay.

Experiencing Halong Bay

Post-Pho and a rest, we set off for Halong Bay the following morning. Opting for a chartered bus made the trip toddler-friendly. Our cruise in Halong Bay was made comfortable with a booked private cabin, simplifying nap and diaper times.
I recommend booking a plan with a private cabin for those traveling with children, as it offers a break for parents to stretch or rest.

An hour into the cruise, we arrived at Halong Bay!
The views were breathtaking, with clear weather allowing us to enjoy the scenery without the hindrance of dense fog.

Our daughter seemed more entertained by the boat than the view, but the joy was in finding something enjoyable for everyone.

Adventures in Halong Bay

Our adventure included a switch to a smaller rowboat, navigating through the bay's majestic rock formations. This change in perspective offered a closer look at Halong Bay's grandeur.

We explored the Thien Cung Cave, noting the challenging terrain that necessitates carrying infants. The cave's beauty, vast and awe-inspiring, was well worth the effort, though sneakers are recommended for the uneven steps and dim lighting.

The return trip was a cozy drowse back to our stay in Hanoi, concluding our swift journey.
For those contemplating a visit to Vietnam, Halong Bay alone makes the trip worthwhile, promising an unforgettable experience for families and travelers alike.
